Typography Booklet
The Solution
To bring this brand to life, I created a refined colour palette consisting of muted, coastal colours that evoke calm and relaxation. It was important to correct the colour palette to match the luxury spa vibes that the brand was advertising on its website. Now their message and their brand colours are telling the same story. I also completely redesigned the logo using Adobe Illustrator. I based the logo on the unique arch shape of their cabins. I also added a star-like shape to represent the mineral that is the highlight of their resort. The logo is now much simpler and more luxurious to attract the right audience to the resort. Additionally, the typefaces they were using were outdated, and there was no consistent usage of them across the website. I ensured that the new typography felt contemporary and high-end to match the new brand identity.
The Challenge
The core objective of this project was to design an educational booklet that uses a theme to explore the fundamental typography principles. For my theme, I chose cinematography. The main challenge for me was integrating these two distinct disciplines into a single, coherent visual narrative. Beyond simply presenting information about typography, I also had to follow all of the rules of typography. I learned about how to adjust type settings to get close to perfect typography. Additionally, I had to follow a strict grid system across all of my spreads to create a cohesive design. This was challenging for me because I wanted to create a very artistic and flowing design.
The Approach
My creative direction was heavily inspired by the aesthetic of vintage film, which influenced the selection of graphics and imagery. I decided to do a green and orange colour palette because of the colours often seen in old film and photography, due to the camera quality at the time. Through my research, I discovered that typography plays a huge role in film, appearing in everything from title sequences and credits to in-movie graphic design and captions. This insight allowed me to be more flexible and creative in how I described each typographic principle. It also allowed me more flexibility with the imagery I used.
