The Challenge

This project was a collaborative exercise. We had to partner up and design our partner’s ideal event. My partner’s ideal event was a kids’ overnight camp at Whitsunday Reef Resort in Australia. The objective was to create a compelling poster for this event. The goal of the event is to encourage young people to explore and learn about marine life. My goal was to produce a high-energy visual poster with bright colours and fun illustrations that would resonate with children. I also wanted to use it to showcase my illustration skills for my professional portfolio.

The Approach

To get the attention of my target demographic, which is children and children of young kids, I aimed to create a very colourful poster with high contrast and kid-friendly illustration. I wanted to encourage the kids' imagination with the design. To do this, I wanted the design to evoke the vastness of the ocean, using an element of mystery and depth to draw the viewer in. The strategy focused on a "deep sea" aesthetic, incorporating dark blues, rich textures, and various sealife to create an immersive atmosphere that felt adventurous. I used a bubbly, readable text with lots of character to hopefully further engage kids.

The Solution

I began by using a cheeky, humorous tagline designed to catch an adult's eye because it is a somewhat shocking slogan. The visual layout is intentionally busy and vibrant, using kid-friendly illustrations with bold shapes and flowing lines to guide the viewer’s eyes across the page. To mimic the depth of the reef and ocean, I used lots of layers in the composition. I did so by placing certain elements in the foreground and fading others into the distance. I created a genuine sense of discovery. I added popular sealife for kids, such as sharks, jellyfish, clownfish and seaweed to this underwater wonderland. Technically, this piece allowed me to demonstrate my versatility by using Adobe Illustrator and Procreate seamlessly, showing how vector precision and digital painting can work together to create a cohesive, professional result.
